I also would replace the subdomain with version. How else are you going to express subdomain? Thats silly.

Are we supposed to go to http://v0.1.amazon.com/books/ as the default uri

vs http://books.amazon.com (defaults to default version)

You see average user does not pick version but by putting it in subdomain you are forcing it on every user plus forcing change it HTTP PROTOCOLS!!!
