Repairability : Macbook vs Framework Laptop
Due to the #righttorepair movement pressuring legislatures across our country (trust me, thats a good thing), places like Apple made ‘promises’ to become more open about repairs with their products and making their manuals and parts freely available to technicians and consumers so they could repair their products themselves.
So this last month, Apple finally listed the repair list of prices for their products. So for fun, we thought we would compare that list against the most repairable laptop on the market, the Framework Laptop.
Parts Comparison Winner : Framework
So first lets look at a side by side comparison.
There are ALOT of things that are embarassing for Apple
- keyboard / battery / top case : In Framework, I can replace these all separately. For example, if I want to replace the battery, it only costs me $59. But to replace the battery on a Macbook, I have to buy a $600 part that is some kind of monster of glued together components that I can’t get separately. A $600 battery??? or a $600 keyboard??? Thats insane!!
- display : OMG! That display must have some proprietary bullshit built in for it to be $679 vs $179
- trackpad : $95 for a trackpad? The only additional feature Apple has added to this vs Framework is a 3x markup of the cost!
Aside from that the other main diff is the logic board and since it is a custom logic board, they can charge what they want for that.
But considering that they are gluing large pieces of hardware together still that you cannot pay for separately (ie $600 battery), this round must go to the Framework laptop.
Repairability Score Winner: Framework Laptop
This is not even a competition. I have fixed both and came away in AWE of how easy it is to repair a Framework laptop. They made a laptop so easy that even my mom would be able to fix this. NOT… A… JOKE!
PLUS, RAM is upgradable again! No more soldering that in.
Framework: 10/10 repairability
Macbook Pro : 4/10 repairability
